Technological development that brings together
the latest knowledge and academic research
that pioneers new knowledge

Decommissioning of a severe accident-damaged reactor is an activity to recover, treat, and dispose of radioactive materials such as damaged fuel and fuel debris, i.e., to gradually reduce the risk from the high-risk state immediately after the accident to a state that can be safely managed, and finally to a state that is safe even without management. In addition to the development of technology that brings together the latest knowledge, academic research that pioneers new knowledge is necessary to implement these activities safely and efficiently.

The Center for Fundamental Research on Nuclear Decommissioning has established the following three research divisions to address technical issues that are of particular importance in nuclear decommissioning and that can take advantage of the potential of materials research, which is one of Tohoku University's major traditional strengths.
